Installing a language pack for Project Server 2007

The installation of a language pack for Project Server 2007 can be a challenging task, since the process is not very user friendly.

Step 1 – Download the language pack

The French language pack can be found at the following address, change the display language to access more language packs: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=fr&FamilyID=2447426b-8689-4768-bff0-cbb511599a45

The title of the  page can be confusing, since this image not only contains the files required to install the language pack in MOSS 2007, but also all the additional services for certain applications hosted by SharePoint, including Project Server 2007. The proper language must be selected from the drop-down list in order to obtain the desired language.

Step 2 – Open the file

This can seem trivial; however, the downloaded file has an .img extension which is not recognized by Windows, Virtual PC/Virtual Server or most archiving application. This is an ISO file which simply has to be renamed and then opened with an application that can read ISO files.

Step 3 – Install the module

The image contains the Setup.exe executable file. The module must be installed on every server of the SharePoint server farm in order to obtain a uniform result. Otherwise, some page sections may appear in English. Once Setup.exe has been launched, the SharePoint Configuration Wizard will be launched to complete the installation. The SharePoint Configuration Wizard must be run once again to finish the installation and then the WSS Timer Service must be restarted and IIS be reset.

The complete technical document regarding this installation can be found at:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/26c07867-0150-463d-b21a-a6d42aecf05a1033.mspx?mfr=true

Following that, all the Project Web Access sites will be multilingual. Changing the Internet Explorer language settings will change Project Web Access’ display language. Note that the SharePoint workspaces are not translated at all. For more details on what is not translated, please see the installation documentation following the link above.
